Hi, I’m Robin! I’m passionate about all things heart, health, and home. Here, you'll find tips, resources, and encouragement to help you flourish in every area of life. Grab a coffee and stay awhile!
It starts with a Pinterest Board, latest inspirations from your favorite designer, magazine cut outs. You’ve got a vision. You’ve got direction. You’ve got a plan. But how do you take the grand design and make it your own? How do you personalize and stylize at the same time? How do you turn house design into HOME design? I’d love to offer some simple ideas to get you started.
First, add family photos and display them artistically.
There’s nothing more personal than capturing the faces and moments of those you love most. Who doesn’t love being surrounded by memories and snapshots in time. Dress up your photos by hanging as a gallery, purchasing and displaying in quality frames, or using art lights to add feature and high design! Smaller, framed photos look great stored in a glass cabinet and can be switched out more frequently. Photo books can be stored nicely here too for quick reach viewing! Balance your personal photos with other media to layer home design. In our home, we had professional photography printed in black and white and framed with beautiful black/brass trimmed frames. We hung in a simple, classy gallery grid and it’s the centerpiece to our living space!
Secondly, purposefully choose artwork for your home.
Not every decorative piece needs a super special element but it’s great to consider personal connections when searching. Ask yourself what you want people to know about you. Are there sayings or quotes you’d like to visibly inspire yourself and others? Resist the temptation to simply grab the latest trendy box store wall art seen in everyone’s homes and think through what you want your decor to say of you! Examples we’ve used in our home are artwork depicting Normandy cliffs (my husband’s grandfather was at the battle at Normandy beach,) a framed antique flag to portray our love of country and my husband’s military service and a gorgeous minimalistic framed canvas depicting Jesus’ love and pursuit of us. While “live, laugh, love” may be on its way out, I love inspirational quotes uniquely styled. We love the framed Etsy canvas reminding us to cherish each day, that “These are the good ol’ days!”
Lastly, mix old and new!
This adds depth of character to your home! Personal trinkets, dinnerware passed on from relatives, antique book sets that speak to you. Old items don’t need to look dingy or out of place, they can be gorgeous and functional pieces. They can bring the past into the future and add warmth to your home. We’ve been blessed with several items passed down from family, but one of my favorites is a little bird from my husband’s grammy. She was so kind and sweet and I love seeing little reminders of her in our home!
Take a look at a few links to artwork/pieces we’ve used below. I’m also linking a local Etsy shop selling beautiful antiques if you’re looking for some quality pieces to stagger in your design!
Have fun making your house a flourishing home.
